Workshop One

Classic Egyptian Choreography to “Enta El Hob”

Hands, Arms, and the Breath That Moves Them

Saturday, October 10, 2026
1:00–3:00 PM

Some songs are part of the language every serious raqs sharqi dancer is expected to speak. In this workshop, you'll learn a choreography to one of the great pieces of classic Egyptian repertoire, and you'll come away knowing that music inside and out.

We begin with the story. Who composed it, who made it famous, and what makes it matter? You'll learn to listen like a musician: to hear the rhythms shift beneath the melody, to recognize when the orchestra answers the soloist, and to let each change in the music decide how you move.

Two threads run through the whole workshop: hands and arms with intention... arm lines that frame and finish the body, wrists and fingers that articulate phrasing... and breath as the engine of the dance, from sharp to silky, from contained to expansive.

By the end, you'll have a complete choreography you can perform with confidence, a deeper understanding of a cornerstone song of the repertoire, and a fresh awareness of how breath shapes everything you do.

Workshop Two

Parts & Pieces: Elements of Arabic Music

Learn the language your dance is built on

Saturday, October 10, 2026
3:30–5:30 PM

Ever wonder what the musicians are actually doing while you dance? This workshop takes you inside Arabic music, part lecture and part dance, so you can hear, name, and move to what's happening in the music, not just around it.

You'll start with the foundation: the basic and most commonly used rhythms in raqs sharqi — recognize them by ear, say them out loud, and feel them in your body. Then we'll zoom out for an overview of Arabic music: how melody works, how an ensemble is put together, what the instruments are, and how a piece is structured from opening to finale.

Along the way, you'll pick up the vocabulary musicians use. When a bandleader calls out a section or a drummer mentions a rhythm by name, you'll know what's being said, and you'll be able to communicate with live musicians, DJs, and fellow dancers with confidence and respect.

This is not a theory class that stays in your head. Throughout the session, we'll get up and put the ideas into movement. You'll leave with sharper listening skills, a working musical vocabulary, and a deeper connection to every piece you perform.
